Link Building 101

Two of the three big search engines (Google and Yahoo) place a large importance on one way links to determine rankings. Each link to your site is like a vote and the more votes you have, the higher you will rank.

In this article I will be sharing with you some important info on link building and some strategies to help your one way link building.

Before we get started, it's important to understand the fundamentals...

Beginning with the very basics, a link is a way of navigating from one webpage to another. An 'internal link' is a link within the same website. An 'external link' takes you from a webpage in one website to a webpage in another website. The meaning of 'backlink' is that your site is being linked to from another website.

There are 4 different types of links:

* URL Link - This is simply a website url that is a link.

* Text Links (aka static links) - This is the most common type of link (when you click on a word or phrase and it is a link)

* Image Links - An image link is simply an image that you click on to navigate to another webpage.

* Dynamic Links - These types of links are in another programming language called Javascript and while they also take you from one webpage to another, they have 'extra codes' to perform special functions.

(these types of links can appear in many different forms)

It is important to be able to recognize these types of links, even if you are not familiar with web design and programming. You don't have to memorize the codes, just learn to identify each type of link.

Links provide navigation for human visitors and for 'spiders' (aka: crawlers, robots, bots). Simply put, a spider is a computer program that goes to websites and gathers information. Search engines use spiders to visit and 'index' your website. This means that they gather information about your site in order to list it in their search results.

When the search engine spiders index your website, they follow the links to get from one webpage to another. It's important to know that search engines cannot follow 'dynamic links' and do not follow html links that have a special code in them that says 'no follow'.

The place where 'no follow' is commonly found is in the "meta tags" section of the website. Meta tags are basically information that only the spiders see and not for the human visitor. You can see the code for any website in your browser by choosing 'view source'. (From Internet Explorer, choose Page » View Source. From Firefox choose View » Page Source)

If a search engine spider cannot follow a link from another website to yours, you can still receive visitors but the link will not have any value from a search engine optimization perspective.

What types of links should you get?

There are 2 types of links that you can get:

* One-way links - A one-way link is when another website links to you and you don't link back to them.

* Reciprocal links - A reciprocal link is when a website links to you and you link back to them.

To search engines one-way links are usually much more valuable than reciprocal links. However, each link has its own individual value based on: how relevant it is to your site, the text in and around the link, how much authority the website that links to you has, etc.

Also, it's important to know that you can get links that have 'no value' in the eyes of the search engines, but they bring you hundreds or thousands of targeted visitors...

Generally speaking, the more websites that link to you the better. However, building links takes time and energy and if you focus on getting 'high-quality links', you will get a bigger return on your investment. 50 high quality links can be much more valuable from a search engine optimization perspective than 1000 'low quality links'.

What's a high quality link? - Links that brings you Page Reputation (which shows the search engines that other related websites consider you to be important), and links that give you PageRank. Sometimes both together and sometimes not...

To get high rankings on your website, you want to obtain links for targeted keywords. That is why it is important to start with keyword Research.

If your website is about "bird watching", the first step is to 'do keyword research' and find out which keyword you should aim for. While you could just start getting text links for the keyword phrase "bird watching", if no one is searching for that - you won't get any visitors. There's no sense in ranking on the first page for a keyword that no one is looking for.

Or, if there is a lot of competition for that keyword, you might want to pick a "lower hanging fruit".

Here is a great free keywords tool. (The numbers you see are searches/day.)

Another important part is making sure your page is optimized for the keyword you are targeting. If you are focussed on building one way links to your site but the links have anchor text which doesn't even appear on your page, you will likely be wasting your time. (I say likely assuming that you have some competition for your targeted keywords, if there is no competition then it doesn't matter).

In this case a site that has fewer one way links but much better on-page optimization is likely to rank higher. Or maybe you are building one way links to your site but they are just url links and not anchor-text links. Another site that has less links than you but better quality (anchor-text) will be likely to rank higher.

Ideally, you want to build a lot of one way links that have anchor text which includes the primary and secondary keywords that your page is optimized for. Google also uses Latent Semantic Indexing which (in a nutshell) means that they study the synonyms of the keywords on your page. This is to prevent spammers from just loading every second word with their keywords. The relation between all the words on your site is what their algoritm looks for.

So, there's no sense in building one way links if your content is not worthwhile. You want to optimize your pages for your visitors first. Then, you can go through and "sprinkle" your keywords. Then, go out and get one way links with the anchor-text of your targeted keywords, ideally getting most of these links from websites that are related to yours.

Yes, Google looks at how the content on your site and the content on the site you link to relate with eachother. Fewer links to your business site from other business sites will be more valuable link-wise than more links coming to you from a site about video games..

Don't make these link building mistakes:

* Don't spend all your time getting one way links from sites with no Page Rank. One or two links from related Page Rank 5+ sites can be worth more than 100 links from sites with no PR.

* Be careful about buying links or you can get banned. Especially be careful about Site Wide links. If your website only has a few backlinks one day and the next day you have hundreds Google will see this and penalize you.

* Don't spend all your time building one way links that are url-links, you want to get anchor-text links.

* Make sure the links you get are actually worth something, don't get "No-Follow" links.

Happy Link Building!

15 of the Best Link Building Techniques

Here are 15 best link building ways that promise to bounce your site to the top ten search results of Google or any other major search engine. Read them; understand them; and make sure that you use them to taste web success.

1. Post your links to some good and relevant directories. This is the easiest and quickest way to get links. But, remember; many reputed directories don't permit links to internal pages.

2. Have a few complementary sites that support your main website. If the former obtains a rank, contact other webmasters for a 3 or 4 way link building. But, never link your main site from the supplementary one or vice versa; or else the search engine may catch your pattern. Also, ensure that all your sites are under different IP.

3. Include a blog in your main site for obtaining plenty of natural links.

4. Submit quality content articles that talk about your product or service to about 3-5 relevant web directories. They are one of the best link building ways of obtaining one way links, plus attracting traffic to your site.

5. Contact various webmasters and submit your articles to them for one way link.

6. Request links from your business acquaintances or search for local sites.

7. Register your site with the Better Business Bureau. It builds credibility.

8. Create pages in Hubpages, Squidoo, and other such sites to obtain links.

9. Create a list on various topics and put your link with some respectable sites that are related to your business. There are many sites that allow you to do this.

10. Bookmark those pages of your site that are rich in quality content.

11. Issue an RSS feed and organize it, if possible.

12. Associate with forums and post your articles in it for links. Though most of the reputed forums provide NOFOLLOW links, ye they still help.

13. Purchase some high class text links from niche directories and blogs.

14. Use your creativity and create a page or tool that can be used by visitors. For example, create a unique calculator. Let visitors associate with the tool or use it in their own website. This helps you obtain lots of one way links, depending on the quality of the tool.

15. Provide something FREE! The whole world loves free things. This is perhaps the best link building tactic. Such an offer will lure many links towards your site. Search for website designing companies that provide free templates. These templates help get the sites a large number of one way links.

Still thinking about the best link building way? Stop! Pick a few from the ones stated above and watch your site enjoy a ranking among the top ten on Google search!

The Most Essential Link Building Tips

It can seem a bit daunting when you first start to market your website and realize just how much is involved in getting your site and content out to as many people as possible. Most people find what they are looking for via search engines and placing in them can be a long and tedious task, but if you set up a plan and stick to it you can build a strong and visible standing in the world wide web. One of the most influencing factors is how many relevant and quality inbound links your site has (how popular you are.. in a manner of speaking). Here are a few of the top ways to achieve links.

1) Build relevant traffic with a pay per click campaign and get your site more visitors and exposure.

2) Publish as many articles' at major article submission sites as you can. A good article sites pages actually rank highly and can return a large volume of warm traffic.

3) Submit your article to an industry specific news site. Write several article's and submit them to relevant information sites.

4) Join the Better Business Bureau.

5) Get a link from your local chamber of commerce.

6) Submit your link to relevant city and state governmental resources.

7) List your site on your local library's Web site.

8) Build reciprocal links either via a reputable link service or manually by request.

9) Have contests or weekly prizes, the web is filled with people who are looking for freebies.

10) Give away a related service or software that builds value to your site, preferably something that they have to use at your site and brings them back over and over.

11) Social networking and forums are a great way to put your links out there, just make sure they don't use a no-follow on outbound links if you are looking to build inbound links. This is still a great idea and if you supply valuable information you can bring traffic from Social networking sites and Forums.

12) This is the most important.....You absolutely must have great content and a easily navigated site that is updated regularly.

How To Get Backlinks For A Website Or Blog

Have you ever asked yourself, how many backlinks do I have? How to get backlinks is a topic that catches every webmaster's attention, and the various methods are frequently discussed since this I a hot topic. I would like to share some link building techniques with you, which will help you to get lots of backlinks in a very short period time.

Have quality Content- This might sound cliché, but it is certainly true. You can get a lot of backlinks via the trackback route based on the content you write. Your content could be linked from all sorts of blogs who are looking to provide valuable information to their readers. This is one of the best way, if not the best way to build backlinks. Not only will you get a large number of backlinks, but it is also a good way to increase your readership as well. You can get a lot of visitors or even repeated visitors due to the fact that your website was found on another website because of a backlink.

Comment Place On Do-Follow Blogs- This is another proven method. Most of your backlinks will come using this method. This is not only great for link building, but is also a good way to find new blogs, make friends, and get your website in front of the masses.

Submit To Article Directories- One of the easiest way and free method of building backlinks is by submitting articles to article directories. You can submit original articles you have written or you can use article that someone you have paid to do this for you if you are not a writer. You simply post your article, and submit your name and a link with your website in your bio box. When some reads your articles they in turn will see your link and thus you will get the hits.

Submit To Blog Directories- This is another method of building backlinks. Many think that the will be penalized for submitting to a blog directory. This is not true, many people confuse directories with link farms hence the confusion. You are only penalized for submitting to directories if you are paying for the link. You should never do this , it is just a waste of money given the fact of the many free directories available.

These methods are not revolutionary, but the will get the work of building backlinks done. For as it is known, the more backlinks a site has, the better will be it's Google PageRank, which is value of your site's worth, and advertisers will sure want to pay you for ad spot on your site.

Improving Link Popularity In 2008

Links are one kind of off-page criteria that measures human reaction to your content.

An effective linking strategy will not only please your visitors, it is very pleasing to the search engines.

The more sites linking to you and the more important these linking sites are, and the closer the websites are to the theme of your website, the more popularity the search engines award to your website-webpage.

Search engines consider the number of inpointing links to a website as a way to...

1. Establish Credibility...

An in-pointing link from quality websites is like receiving a vote. The webmaster thinks highly enough of your website to link to you.

Don't manipulate the search engines by getting links from sites that are not related to your theme. This is an artificial way to increase your link popularity and search engines frown highly on this. Just Don't Do It!

2. Formulate Ranking Algorithms...

More often than not today, search engines are factoring link popularity and link credibility(i.e. where in-pointing links are coming from) into their rank algorithms. This is a good reason not tweaking your webpages (on-page optimization). Leave them alone for now.

Remember this, it only takes a few quality, credible, and theme based in-pointing links to make this work.

There are some out there that believe these links will bring in groves of traffic, there is nothing further from the truth. You will get a trickle of traffic from time to time but not enough to pay the bills. These links are for the search engines to determine credibility.

Below are a few ideas to get your link program rocking along...

1. Get incoming links from the major directories and the second tier directories also.

2. Get incoming links from theme-specific sections of free major directories.

3. Participate in "value exchange". This is the most simplest, fastest, most efficient, and the most natural way to find high value websites that want to link back to you. These are what search engines are looking for... Relevant Sites, Linking to Relevant Sites.

Oh yea, did I mention this service is absolutly free? Yes, I Said Free, no charge for the best link exchange program on the internet.

Here's where you can learn more about http://value-exchange.sitesell.com/A-H-B-G.html

4. Outbound links with quality theme related non-competing websites. You will find many great sites during your surfing venture on the web.

One thing to remember... Nothing can be more damaging to you than linking to inferior websites. Low quality, non-credible websites can do you in, in a quick fashion.

Your visitors will see through this and click away and never return. Search engines also will not take a positive reflection of these practices. Getting banned by search engines is also a possibility. Just stay away from low quality and inferior website.

I'm sure following these steps will make life much easier when it comes to link strategies and link popularity.

Link Baiting, The Good, The Pretty Good and The Unforgiving

Hey everyone. First I would like to say thank you to all my readers and visitors. We will all come together and make it happen for all of us in the long run, again thank you for all your support. OK, now on to the subject for today.Let's talk about "Link Baiting" and what it is exactly.

Link baiting is, in simple terms, having a article or blog post worthy of being posted on another website by the owner of that website. As this happens, your link gets spread around from site to site and the readers of that site get a closer look at you and have found respect and trust in you because someone they trust have added you to their site. This is considered "Viral" marketing. It works well in forums or places where discussions are taking place about different topics or subjects. Link Baiting is sort of like "Fishing" (And I mean at the lake, not phishing peoples info). There are what we consider several different types of "Hooks" or "Lures" that make link baiting possible. This kind of marketing is also good to promote any product or niche you have a campaign on as well as Brand yourself along with it. This will eventually have a good or even great impact on your affiliate marketing business. So let me explain each one in detail: The Hooks:

The first "Hook" is called the "News Hook":

If you read an article or news bulletin and do your research about that article and can disprove it ethically with facts and being respectful in doing so, then you can become an Authority Figure on the subject, thus, gaining trust and respect of your readers. Also I need to mention another form of "News Hook". If you were to find an article or several that relate to your niche, make sure they are interesting and catch the attention of your readers and be the first to link to them, this also is a way to brand yourself and promote your niche, your affiliate marketing business.

The second "Hook" is called 'Resource Hook"

This "Hook" is an exceptional one. The "Resource Hook" is a helpful article, post or resource that you, yourself write or give freely that helps your readers along in their life, whether it's a recommended program, free software or tools or a list of other resources you have gathered yourself. As long as it is useful and helpful to your readers and possible consumers, and you give it freely, this will instantly boost your credibility and reputation amongst them. And you feel good to be able to help out others. And you will receive links back to your article and your site. Like I always say, "Giving is generosity that all people should practice".

The third 'Hook" is called "Humor Hook"

This hook is strictly for a niche or product you may have a campaign on. Lets say through your searching or researching you were to come across something extremely funny that relates to your niche. Like a picture, video or even an article. Posting this up on your site could gain you popularity because they say "Laughter is the healer of the Soul", right. So now you post it up on your site and people are happy to see that not only are you a serious business person but you also have a sense of humor and they get a kick out of it enough to link back to you and your humorous post. This is where showing your personality builds your character.

The fourth "Hook" is called "Excited or Belief Hook"

If you find something that really gets you excited, makes you feel happy or changes your life. This is a hook that is easy to promote because you believe in the product. This is my favorite "Hook" because you feel good about what you are promoting. And if you feel good it will translate into your writings, trust me. Not just that but you can talk or write about it with conviction. It is the ultimate high feeling so good about something and being able to share it with your friends, readers and everyone. Knowing that you will help people is the ultimate reward. This will get your readers excited and you will again instantly gain respect, authority, trust and build your character as a person fast.

The fifth "Hook" is called "Comment Hook"

I like this one a lot as well as number 4. This "Hook" is a BIG respect hook to the author you post a comment to, which will get you your respect back. They say "To Get Respect you have to Earn it", right. Well this is the way to earn it. Now don't go spamming blogs, post or articles just to gain popularity. There is a ethical way to do this. If they have written about a niche or subject that relates to yours and it is a good article, then kool, go ahead and leave a comment telling them why you liked their article. You can, in some cases leave a link to an article that you have written or a way to get in contact with you. But spamming your information is not a good idea. What this will do for you is gain the respect of the people and the site for which you left your comment and most likely gain their interest and the interest of their readers as well. Pretty soon you may have your links on their website posted by them. Ahhhhh, the Ethics of online marketing and affiliate marketing. Feels good, doesn't it.

These are the five I recommend. There are two others that I don't recommend and if you use them, us them with extreme caution.

The sixth "Hook" is called "Attacking Hook"

This "Hook" can be dangerous and hurt you along the way. This is where you accuse or try to discredit an article or post about a niche or certain subject. When doing so you tell your readers and theirs that this article or post is basically a lie and/or a scam which could cause hard feelings between you and the author of that post. If you choose to go this route, I HIGHLY recommend that you do thorough research on the subject and make sure that what you say can be justified not just by you but others. Also you may create a mob of angry bloggers that could link back to negative posts.

And the seventh "Hook" is called "Contrary Hook"

I know that all of you have heard the term "According to Contrary Belief". In other words, what many other people may believe and have written about but are not necessarily true or with holding certain information that can be critical or misleading to the readers. Well this is a form of that but through article and post writings. This is where you become very controversial in your article or post about someone else's article or post. Either trying to disapprove it, disagree with it or simply saying they left out to much information as if to have their readers walking around with blinders on to hide what is lurking within the walls. Again, this is also a dangerous tactic and could hurt you. They say that "Honesty is the Best policy" but they also say "Good guys/girls finish last". Get my point. I personally don't believe that "Good guys/girls finish last" but be cautious. Controversy can also cause hard feelings. If you choose this route again, "DO YOUR RESEARCH".

Link baiting is one of the most successful ways to promote yourself, your niche and gain trust, respect and authority amongst all people. It will benefit your online business and boost your affiliate marketing sales 300% and more. So remember that ethics, respect and research are all KEY factors in "Link Baiting" and that it is possible to hurt yourself as well as promote yourself with this type of marketing. Good luck in all your endeavors and always keep smiling. Peace and GOD speed.

How To Get Backlinks

One of my favorite ways to get traffic to my sites is through search engine optimization (SEO). Look at it this way: I've already put the work into writing the content, why shouldn't I get that great Google search engine traffic-for free!

The only problem with this scenario is getting my pages to rank high enough in the search results to be found by a significant number of searchers. "High enough" translates into getting into the top 10-because most people's browsers are set only to display the top 10 results on the first page of their search results.

One way I get my pages to rank high is to social bookmark them as soon as they're published. That really gives them a ranking boost.

The other way I get my pages ranked is to create links coming from other websites pointing to the page in question. These inbound links are called backlinks, and getting them can either be a pain in the neck or a brief chore, depending of how I go about it.

The hard way to get backlinks is to convince another webmaster to link to your site. Now, this is not "hard" like rocket science is supposed to be hard. It's just time consuming. You have to find sites you would like linked to yours, contact the webmaster, and give them a compelling reason to link to you. Often you have to link back to them, which might be appropriate to your website or not.

The other way-much easier-is to write articles that point to your pages.

You can get traffic from these articles in two ways. One, through the higher ranking of the page you're trying to rank. Two, through traffic that clicks through your article. So, the articles serve double duty.

Another idea is to create other websites and link them to your own website. Now, this is probably not going to do you much good, unless the page rank of the linking site is greater than the page rank of the site linked to. You can create websites on Web 2.0 platforms that rank well in the search engines. Squidoo, Hubpages, and Weebly come to mind. (Although Weebly less than the other two.)

One more quick note that will help tremendously. When you make a text link, that's called the anchor text. If you make the anchor text the same as the keyword phrase you're trying to get your page ranked for, you'll be even further ahead of the curve.

Link Building Secrets - 4 Easy Ways To Get Fast Backlinks

Building backlinks is one of the main keys to attaining high search engine rankings. If you want search engine positions that will get you a flood of free traffic on autopilot, you absolutely must start knowing how to get quality backlinks fast.

Here are 4 easy ways to get backlinks that you can start putting into action right away:

1. Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is one of the fastest ways to get quality backlinks in just minutes. Sites like Digg, reddit and del.icio.us are quality websites that give authority backlinks not to be sniffed at when you post at those places. And if you use Social Marker to post to these sites, it makes the whole process automated.

2. Article Submissions

Submitting articles around the web is one fast way to get high quality backlinks by the hundreds. The trick is to use an article submitter such as Submit Your Article, and they'll submit your article to hundreds of directories and RSS feeds.

3. Blog Comments

Go to blogs covering your niche topic and post comments on them. However, don't spam the blogs. Instead, post relevant and informative comments, then add in your anchor text link to get a backlink to your site.

4. Forum Posting

Many forums are also considered authority sites and you can generate backlinks from your forum's signature file. However, do check their Page Source to see if they are using a no=follow link. Just use the 'Find' option in Page Source and search for 'no=follow'. A forum with no=follow enabled is not much use for generating backlinks.

Comment Your Way to Inbound Links

In building a backlink strategy for your site, remember that there are different ways to get links. One of the easiest ways is to do a link exchange

Link exchanges are done with similar sites with both sites placing a link to the other. Link exchanges have been penalized by search engines because of heavy spam but there still benefits to doing a link exchange, so don't be afraid to try.

The best links to get our inbound one way links. These links are sometimes difficult to get because there is no exchange. It requires the other web site to link to you without you linking to them. Building one way, inbound links should be a top priority in your off-page optimizing strategy.

In order to get one way links you have to get noticed. Gaining attention online is not much different from getting attention off-line.

To gain links, you need to provide content that is unique and original to entice other sites to link to you. One way to develop this content is to add a blog, Forum, or other method to regularly add content to your site. If you have a static web site it will be much more difficult to gain links.

Applying SEO techniques such as the above can bring great benefits. As an example if you are trying to optimize a site that sells vitamins. The first step would be researching highly ranked competitors. After analyzing their sites you can use their blog or forum to determine what topics are hot. Typically in these community sites hot topics will draw quite a bit of traffic and comments from readers.

One method of gaining their attention is to look at the topics on their site that are creating the most commotion. When you find the hot topics, do a review of the site on your blog. In your review concentrate on the hot topic, but don't just talk about their services. Remember you're trying to gain attention so argue about what they're missing or things they don't have. The key is you're not trying to advertise for them rather you want to establish yourself as an expert.

Many times your review via a blog will be noticed by the other site. It's not automatic, so you may have to bring it to their attention. Think of it as being in a crowd where everyone is talking. If you enter the conversation you must make sure to say something relevant. If you speak up and say something unrelated or meaningless people in the crowd will quickly dismiss you.

Here's the trick to this technique, when you comment about a site or bring up a controversial point they have to link to you to reply to your review. Remember to position yourself as an expert when you do this. Don't be rude or obnoxious, but make meaningful comments and reviews and you're bound to get noticed.

Generally, blogs track links back to the blog, so most likely if they feel something needs to be answered, they will.

Don't just leave it up to the whims of fate, after doing your review leave a comment on the site. Excerpt just enough of your review to get attention and peak their interest. This will serve two purposes, first it helps establish you as an expert, second you will benefit from their readers following the link in your comment to your site. The key is to do this on popular active sites. If the site doesn't have an active community, reading and commenting, you will get the benefit.

In time you will build links and increase traffic to your site. If you do it right you'll see the numbers jump in your traffic from other readers visiting your site to get the rest of the story.
