Generating Revenue With a Personal Blog

Blogging is something that has generated it's own revolution. The concept is not new by any means and people with very little web experience will many times recognize the term. Following the initial revolution, though, is the wave of people and small businesses generating side income and even full time income from a blog. This income is semi-passive and very mobile. Let's step through the process...

The idea is to set up a blog (or web log) and spend time writing about things you love to write about. People with like interests eventually wander onto your blog and even link to it from other blogs or web sites. This causes an increase in traffic from these sources and also causes search engine popularity to grow...giving you incoming search traffic from places like Google, Yahoo! and MSN.com As you maximize traffic you will be able to monetize it with products, services, ad revenue and affiliate income. An active blog is very much in demand.

As an example, picture a blog with 1,000 unique visitors a day. This is not much by any means but by underestimating some numbers we'll find that it can generate a decent amount of income. We shall use context sensitive advertising as an example. Let's estimate that 1 in every 100 people click an ad. Low but sufficient for an estimate. 10 clicks at an estimated 25 cents per click. Again low but it will work. Doing the math will get you $2.50 per day and approximately $75 per month. I would guess then, with a range for revenue per click depending on what your blog is about, $75 t0 $300 per month. Average then would be about 2.5 cents to 10 cents per unique visitor. From there you optimize your blog to maximize this number.

Getting started isn't as hard as you would think. Both Bluehost and StartLogic support easy Wordpress install from the hosting control panels. Wordpress will give you all the features you need to run a solid blog and has the benefit of being user friendly for the new guy/girl. If you want some practice then you can set up a free blog on Wordpress.com. For total flexibility I would always suggest your own hosted blog though. The two hosts I mentioned also let you host multiple domains. Flexibility is only one reason to go this route, two others being your own domain name and hosting multiple blogs or web sites. Domains can increase in value much like real estate.

After getting hosting and domain, most hosting providers give you an easy way to get Wordpress or another blogging solution up and running from the hosting control panel. Familiarize yourself with the blog admin area and make sure you focus on writing about things you love. If you don't know much about your subject or you're trying to write about something you don't enjoy in hopes of increasing your income you may be headed for frustration. You need to give genuine quality to your readers. Try not to waste their time and you will find your blog becoming a success. Many have entered into a sort of pseudo-retirement this way.

There really isn't a reason to do without a blog. It's an incredible way to generate income and can have a positive effect on a main business site also. Get some hosting and get started. You may find yourself becoming more savvy to other ways to generate income on the web as you explore the realm of blogging.
